Beyond Thresholds: Opening Doors to Change

For the 19th annual J. Paul Taylor Social Justice Symposium, hosted by NMSU Gender & Sexuality Studies, Feminist Border Arts (FBA) co-founding directors, Drs. M. C. Jonet and L. Anh Williams, crafted a visual metaphor for the symposium's theme,  transformative leadership, as an illuminated red door opened against a stark black background, positioned off center, suggesting a passage to the outside. The contrast between the illuminated door and its shadowy surroundings underscores a dual nature—the barriers that confine us and the possibilities that lie just beyond our reach.

Taking inspiration from the critical discourse on the institutionalization of women's, gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, by L. Ayu Saraswati and Barbara L. Shaw, in WSQ: Women's Studies Quarterly, this design embodies the symposium's commitment to challenging traditional boundaries.  It seeks to challenge us to think beyond these confines and encourage a reevaluation of our approaches. The open door is an invitation to explore beyond the confines of the conventional, the probable, the easily quantifiable.

Saraswati and Shaw's analysis emphasizes the importance of evolving beyond measures of success imposed by neoliberal frameworks. They instead advocate for fields and movements that remain active agents for social change, solidarity, and transformation.

Here is  a suite of digital resources designed to help amplify the message of the symposium and bring more voices to the table. We believe in the power of community, media, and the impact of sharing.
