UNTIL (13:50)

Tanin Torabi

Iran

"Until..." is a single-take video, captured using only the switch between the front and back cameras of an iPhone by the performers. Filmed during the 2022 "Woman Life Freedom" protests in Tehran, it showcases a highly intricate choreography for the camera, reflecting the originality and urgency of what is possible artistically to execute in that situation. These protests were in response to the state murder of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman, who died in police custody for violating mandatory headscarf rules.

"We walk. We run. We fall. We hug those who we love and then we run again. We walk together until the walls move."

EARTH ALTARS (La tierra los altares) (68 min.)

Sofía Peypoch

Mexico

Spanish with English Subs

The artist returns to the site of her kidnapping, searching underground in darkness and silence for traces of a buried memory.

Three years ago, I was kidnapped on the outskirts of Mexico City. A month later, I returned to the site, driven by an impulse to recall that place and recover it through the camera. As I advanced, the landscape thickened into an opaque night, casting shadows along the road. At the site, flowers grew among thorns, and the earth seemed to warn of past events. Amid this abyss, the film began. I navigated nearby areas, reconstructing the space with memories of hot, dry earth and an all-encompassing silence. The film captures these sensations, using a static camera and one that navigates underground, revealing spaces of light amid the darkness.

Negative/Positive (14:00)

Federica Foglia

Canada, Italy

Content Note: Stylized Nudity

"Negative/Positive" is a hand-made, camera-less collage film composed of layers of erotic 16mm films from the 1920s, 1940s, and 1970s, mixed with nature documentaries and organic materials. This visual abstraction merges positive black-and-white film with its negative counterpart on the same base, allowing the film to exist in two versions.

The film abstracts female bodies from their original erotic context, removing their male co-protagonists. As the male figures disappear, the female bodies merge with insects and flowers. Using organic material melted with gelatine emulsion, the film creates a crystallized visual allegory of interspecies feminine bodies, offering a unique exploration of identity and transformation.

Two screens: one with a large caterpillar the other with the under cover cop in the film

THE LARGE BLUE (15:00 min)

Jan Adriaans

Netherlands, Australia

English with Captions

"The Large Blue" is a two-screen video based on the book Undercover: The True Story of Britain's Secret Police. The narrative follows a cop's audition to become an undercover agent, incorporating a new identity and being trained to lie convincingly. Set in contemporary Melbourne, the speculative video draws parallels to undercover police units that, starting in the 1960s, infiltrate activist and student protest circles in Western countries, often engaging in romantic relationships, and suppressing social movements. The video draws a parallel to parasitic mimicry, such as the caterpillar that, to get enough food, mimics the pheromones of ants. Once taken into the nest, the large caterpillar can eat ant larvae undisturbed, slowly but surely depleting the colony of its future. This species of caterpillar then pupates into a large blue butterfly.
