June 28 - International Pride Date Significance

FBAFF, by standing alongside International Pride Day, actively champions the enduring power of creative expression and the humanities-arts in shaping social transformation.

The alignment of FBAFF with International Pride Day on June 28th asserts its commitment to both the celebration of diverse narratives and the continued struggles for women's and LGBTQIA+ rights. This date marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a turning point in LGBTQIA+ history, symbolizing resilience and resistance against discrimination and injustice.

Moreover, this strategic juxtaposition underscores the vital importance of advocating for reproductive rights and transgender human rights, two integral components of the broader LGBTQIA+ rights movement. It recognizes the complex layers of identity and experience within the LGBTQIA+ community and echoes the call for inclusive representation and intersectional advocacy.

In the face of formidable challenges, FBAFF, G&SS, students, supportive faculty and staff members, community, and filmmakers champion the profound importance of feminist, queer, transgender, and other transformative creative expression, scholarship, teaching, and interventions. Together, let us forge ahead in our pursuit of more equitable and inclusive worlds, leaving an enduring impact on the present and future of social relations, academic inquiry. and institutional practices.

About FBAFF

The Feminist Border Arts Film Festival (FBAFF) is a university-based initiative that showcases underrepresented approaches in film, video, and digital media. Focusing on women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and socially conscious filmmakers from the US and around the world, FBAFF serves as a platform for exploring new ways of imagining, challenging conventional representation, and promoting social change. Through curated screenings and thought-provoking programming, we strive to cultivate a nuanced understanding and critical appreciation of the arts and humanities, inspiring intellectual engagement and fostering scholarly exploration of diverse perspectives. Committed to the principles of feminist, queer, and other socially transformative movements, FBAFF promotes critical viewership, social awareness, and public scholarship, utilizing film, video, and digital media as tools for critical inquiry and transformation.

The festival defines “feminist border arts” as a practice that challenges the limits of conventional representation through telling stories from the edge; threshold visions from the margins that create new ways of understanding, that imagine underrepresented ways of knowing. Selected pieces revive the promise of cinema to open minds, create new vistas, and challenge dehumanizing forms of representation.

FBAFF curates a diverse selection of cinematic forms for screenings, encompassing digital storytelling, live-action narratives, documentaries, essays, video art & performance, experimental films, new media, and animation. We bring together student, independent, and professional filmmakers from the United States and around the globe, fostering a transnational dialogue and embracing the spirit of border-crossing and boundary-breaking.

FBAFF is recognized as a highly selective festival, renowned both nationally and internationally for its exceptional programming and curation. Films bearing the FBAFF laurel have garnered recognition at renowned film festivals, including Cannes, Toronto International Film Festival, and Sundance. Furthermore, FBAFF has the ability to attract and showcase top-tier filmmakers and creators, offering a unique opportunity to experience their remarkable creations.

Operating at the intersections of academia, digital humanities, public scholarship, and the creative arts, FBAFF's programming is carefully curated in close collaboration with the educational and scholarly goals of NMSU's academic unit for Gender & Sexuality Studies (G&SS). This academic unit provides an inter- and transdisciplinary specialized focus on the study of women, genders, sexualities, and related topics at NMSU. It offers a variety of courses open to both majors and non-majors, allowing students from diverse academic backgrounds to engage with the field. In addition, G&SS offers a range of degree options, including a Bachelor of Arts (BA), an undergraduate minor, a graduate minor, and an NMSU Global BA. These degree options provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding and explore a wide range of topics, approaches, and perspectives within the field.

The specialized concentration of MACS: Media Arts and Cultural Studies within the academic unit of Gender & Sexuality Studies directly intersects with the mission and programming of FBAFF, forging a strong connection between media, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, and research-creation methods. MACS courses integrate theoretical frameworks, critical analysis, and practical applications to explore the dynamic relationship between media, culture, and gender and sexuality.
